The Kit Happens SEO Course - Introduction

This SEO mini course will cover the basic principles of search engine optimisation (SEO) and provide step by step instructions to apply them to a website. I would like to stress that whilst these methods can be applied to virtually any website at Kit Happens we believe SEO should be a fundamental part of the design process. The advantage of tackling SEO at the point of design is that elements such as site navigation can be carefully considered, whilst not critical for SEO purposes factors like this do help, but even more importantly a well designed site navigation system is going to be more appealing to website visitors. This brings me on the my next point, whilst the primary purpose of SEO is to get your website to rank high in search engines, it is critical to remember that the reason for doing this is that you are trying to attract more visitors to your website, therefore it must be appealing to human visitors and not just search engines. This means that design, layout and quality content are very important factors, so remember to always think about the user experience your website delivers. Before we delve into the course just one final point, the methods detailed within this course are white-hat SEO strategies, we never engage in black-hat SEO methods and would never encourage anyone else to. Black-hat methods can work in the short term, but longer term they will back fire with the potential consequence of your site being removed from the search engines index altogether. Once your site has been removed from the index it can be very difficult and take a very long time before search engines trust your domain enough to include it again and even longer to achieve high rankings. I won’t be going into too much detail in this course about what not to do, or the various black-hat methods, since that would warrant it’s own dedicated course. However the general rule is to avoid anything that could be seen as a form of spamming and avoid any activity which attempts to trick search engines. They are far too clever and you will get caught in the end, to the detriment of your site. Finally no one can promise you a No.1 position in the search engines, they can only apply the correct principles and have a good idea that a site will achieve good listings, ideally page 1, but there are many factors involved, many of which a beyond any individuals control. If someone promises you a No.1 spot, chances are they themselves are using black-hat methods, and they will be long gone by the time your site is banned from the search engine index, so avoid them at all costs! In this course we’re assuming that you are optimising an existing website, look out for the next chapter of this course soon, this will cover the subject of keyword research.
